Here is a another unofficial remix that started when I was trying to come up something for my dj sets. It’s some sort of future funk electro afro house blend. It’s a remix of Amadou & Mariam – Sabali. These two are quite a story, often known as “the blind couple from Mali”. They met at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind, and found they shared an interest in music. They emerged from the underground last year and now find themselves opening for Coldplay. Here is an unofficial remix of Hometown Glory by ADELE. The remix was done by myself (Poor Ragged Rascal) and Speak Easy. If you’d like to hear the original artist version just click the itunes link.

… All feedback is welcome, as it’s still a work in progress. The track keeps the same basic structure of the original song because it’s just about perfect in it’s ebb and flow as it is. There is an added section at the end for dj’s to mix out of. The song is best described as breakbeat future funk and neo soul. The bass line is in your face… enjoy.

Tribute to Michael Jackson

One of our listeners, requested a post about Michael Jackson….

If you were a kid in the 80’s it’s hard not to feel some sort of sadness and loss. He inspired so many bad moonwalks by kids all over the planet. I was in a restaurant yesterday in downtown Orlando and I happened to look over at the TV. My wife was poking a bit of fun at me because I did get a bit emotional. The waitress didn’t have to bring me a handkerchief or anything but eyes were a slightly teary. I actually found my own reaction to be surprising, and I guess I’ll blame it on the fact that I get slightly manic when I’m in the process of writing music.

The time of the Thriller album had such an impact on me and all my friends. Both the music and the videos were completely inspiring to my 7 year old eggshell mind. The funky bass rhythms have stayed with me all these years and even found their way into the milk crates in recent years with sampled bass lines turned into housey jams or even funky instrumental remakes of “Thriller” by Speak Low.

I think the thing that amazed me most was all the people that cared… all the people standing outside the hospital, or even in front of the TV in the restaurant I was in. I don’t recall the King of Soul, James Brown getting anywhere even close to this much attention. Of Course, he was older and it just didn’t seem as sudden as this. It’s just amazing to me that one man can affect so many people on such a deep level.

The night progressed and we went to 3 different bars and no matter what type of music each and every DJ normally played they all played Michael Jackson all night long. One DJ at the Crooked Bayou even had a Thriller tee-shirt on. It’s just a matter of paying respect. Before the night was over we were out there dancing to one of my all time favorite songs “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5.

“Firstly, I’d like to say I love your mixes, and have much respect. Thank you very much for all the inspiration and supporting great music all around. Oh, and since I’m at it, the “Biosphere” Obama mix was ridiculous!!!! Played it 3 times in a row…love it! The Biosphere was so surreal and ambient. It intensified the moments before the actual election for me…really sort of personified it. It’s very difficult to put it into words, but it reminded me of when I was in London for 3 months and I went to a club called The End…a place run by Mr C and I think Layo of Layo & Bushwacka!…and Mr C had a set that was so intense that there was not one person in there dancing in their own little sphere, almost tranced into this outer-world of music…I loved it. But I could listen to this mix on massive speakers and just get carried away in its subtlety and charm. Wicked stuff, mate.

just a quick little thing … did you come up to NYC to play a party i’d say about 4-5 months ago? my mentor, Pierre said he met you because after i introduced Black Market Funk to him, he went and told his friend…his friend (probably some French guy…), loved your music, and from what i was told, wanted you to play a gig for his party. i wish i could have been there, but unfortunately i had work, but Pierre said it was absolutely amazing.
